Meeting 21 March, and some other stuff

Hi everyone,
This week’s updates should just about all be here!
There’s quite a bit to cover this week, partly because we’ve built up
a backlog whilst getting ourselves organized.

MEETING : PORTRAITURE COMPETITION LAUNCH

Monday 21 March 2011, 7 PM
LT2, Boyd Orr Building, University of Glasgow

We’ll be launching the first in a series of photographic competitions
on Monday, and there’s going to be a prize! And not just the adoration
of your peers, a real prize you can hold in your hands.
Come along for details of what you can submit, what sort of editing
you’ll be allowed to do, and, of course, details of the prize.
There should also be time to have a short critique session for any
portrait related work you’d like to have constructively criticized. We
don’t bite, and we try to be helpful, not dismissive!

There should also be details of the photobook the society is putting
together – both how you can enter photos, and how you’ll be able to
buy one.

PHOTOWALK : GLASGOW CATHEDRAL

Wednesday 23 March 2011, 5 PM
Meeting outside Glasgow Cathedral

We’ll be having a midweek photowalk in the cathedral area of the city
during the week, led, we assume, by our new Events Coordinator, Tom.
We’re not really sure what he has planned, except that he’s walking us
back to the city centre…
Keep an eye on the Facebook page or the website for more information.

To get to the cathedral by Subway you’ll need to alight at Buchanan
Street and walk along Bath Street (the one which runs under Buchanan
Galleries) and Cathedral Street.

DAY TRIP : NEW LANARK & CLYDE FALLS

Saturday 26 March 2011, 11 AM
Meeting in Glasgow Central Station

Weather permitting we’re organizing a trip to New Lanark, a town which
has an intriguing history, which you can read about here.
We’ll be catching the 11:18 train, which should take just under an
hour to get us to Lanark, then we’ll walk the short distance to New
Lanark.
The Falls of Clyde are interesting in themselves, being the site of
the UK’s first commercial hydro-electric power plant, built in 1926.
It would be sensible to bring decent shoes or walking boots, because
the ground walking along to the Falls can be quite slippy. If you just
want to see the town though you can wait in the coffee shop in one of
the old mill buildings, and enjoy the warmth.

NEW COMMITTEE

It’s been a long email, and it’s still not quite done.
At the EGM a few weeks ago the PhotoSoc got a shiny new committee:

  • President - Daniel Williams
  • Secretary - Geoffrey Sneddon
  • Treasurer - Sean Anderson
  • Events Coordinator – Tom Whitchurch
  • Technical Convenor - Dasha Miller

The new committee would like to extend its thanks to Sean, last year’s
president, and our new treasurer, for keeping things going
more-or-less single handed.

IF YOU LIKED THAT

Finally, we’re at the end. There are just a few other events members
might be interested, which are being run by other groups or societies
about the city.
